File Organization

Automatically sort and rename footage based on slate metadata.

Classification Rules

After Enchant analyzes your footage, it assigns each clip to a category based on the detected slate information. You can configure how files are grouped:

  • By Scene — Group all takes of the same scene into one folder.
  • By Scene & Take — Nested folders: Scene → Take.
  • By Camera — Group by camera roll (A-cam, B-cam, etc.).
  • By Date — Group by shooting date extracted from the slate or file metadata.
  • Custom — Define your own hierarchy using any combination of fields.

Folder Structure Templates

Enchant includes several preset folder templates commonly used in film and TV production:

File Naming Rules

Enchant can rename files according to customizable patterns. Available tokens:

TokenDescriptionExample
{scene}Scene number001
{take}Take number02
{roll}Camera rollA001
{camera}Camera identifierA
{date}Shooting date2026-03-20
{original}Original filename (without extension)A001_C001_0101AB
{ext}File extension.mov

Example Naming Patterns

# Pattern: Sc{scene}_Tk{take}_{camera}_{original}{ext}
# Result: Sc001_Tk02_A_A001C001.mov

# Pattern: {date}_Sc{scene}_{roll}{ext}
# Result: 2026-03-20_Sc001_A001.mov
Original files are never modified. Enchant creates copies or symbolic links in the organized structure. Your source footage remains untouched in its original location.

NLE Integration

Enchant can generate project files for direct import into your editing software:

Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Exports XML project files with bin structure matching your folder organization.
  • Clips are organized into bins by scene, with markers for slate positions.
  • Open Premiere Pro → File → Import → select the generated .xml file.

DaVinci Resolve

  • Exports DRB (DaVinci Resolve Bin) or XML files.
  • Bins are organized to match the scene/take hierarchy.
  • Open Resolve → File → Import Project → select the file.

Final Cut Pro

  • Exports FCPXML files with keyword collections matching slate metadata.
  • Import via File → Import → XML.
Tip: For best results, ensure your NLE's media paths match the organized folder structure. Use absolute paths when generating export files.

Export Options

When exporting organized footage, you can choose between:

  • Copy — Create physical copies of files in the organized structure. Uses more disk space but ensures independence from source media.
  • Symbolic Link — Create symlinks pointing to original files. Saves disk space but requires the source media to remain accessible.
  • Move — Move files from the source to the organized structure. Saves space but modifies the original folder.
Recommended: Use Copy for archival workflows and Symbolic Link for active editing workflows where disk space is a concern.
